Biography
Textile Artist, Barbara Roe Hebb has a keen interest in repurposing materials and discovering new ways to use fibers, threads and textiles in weaving, basketry, sculpture and personal adornments.
Barbara’s early years were spent in rural central Victoria, Yorta Yorta Nation, then settled on coastal Wadawurrung country. Barbara has worked with fiber and textiles from childhood; being instructed by her sister in garment construction, guided through weaving and spinning by her aunt and picking up skills from her father’s leather work practice. She continued to explore the potential of raw materials and the challenges they pose. Examples include knitting with kelp and spinning unusual fibers (Camel and huskie) to weave.
Barbara exhibits individually, enjoys the process of creating bespoke wall art on commission and participates in local and overseas art and textile exhibitions.
Reflections on the impact of colonization for First Nation Peoples and the environment, can be seen in her work in recent years, as she focusses full time on her creative practice.
