Biography
Ann Molony is a Naarm/Melbourne-based textile artist whose practice explores the sculptural and textural potential of textiles through material, structure and craft. Working primarily with the ancient process of wool felting, her work sits between art, craft and contemporary design.
Raised in Western Victoria, a region known for superfine merino wool, Molony developed an early tactile connection to wool through combing fleece and spinning yarn. She now works predominantly with Australian superfine merino wool, alongside natural fibres such as silk and mohair, creating sculptural wall works and soft forms that are textured and luminous.
Inspired by patterns in the landscape—lines, repetition and shifting light—her work draws on Japanese aesthetics and origami folding principles to explore restraint, balance and rhythm. Variations in tone and surface reveal the physicality of making. With a background in art, fashion and anthropology, Molony’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and recognised through awards. She continues to investigate the visual, tactile and acoustic qualities of felt within contemporary art practice.
