Biography
Allanah Sarafian is a Melbourne-based visual artist working primarily with textiles. Her practice centers on tufting, soft sculpture and sewn objects that explore themes of identity and culture through tactile, textural textiles.
Originally trained in fashion, Allanah brings a strong focus on colour, texture, and construction to her artmaking. Her background in garment design informs her approach to art-making, resulting in works that blur the lines between sculpture, functional object, and visual storytelling.
She began tufting in 2020 during lockdown, adding to a body of work that reimagines architectural motifs and cultural symbols through bold forms and hypercolour palettes. Alongside her tufted wall pieces, Allanah also creates wearable art in the form of sculptural purses—most notably her PB5 bag, which transforms a ubiquitous Australian pedestrian button into a playful artefact of urban life. Allanah’s love of textiles runs through all her work, whether mounted or held.
While her current focus is visual art, Allanah also has an extensive background in puppetry and performance, including touring internationally with Bluey’s Big Play and building puppets for leading Australian companies. She has taught primary school art for over eight years, where her passion for colour and texture continues to influence young artists.
